So what about a supermassive black hole in our own Galaxy, the Milky Way? If we could leave our own Galaxy and look back on it, it would look something like this: a flat-like-a-pancake, spiral distribution of stars with lots of gas and dust waiting in line to become the next generation of stars and solar systems. In the Milky Way our solar system is located about 2 thirds the way from the central core, toward the rim, like a blueberry on the outer edge of a pancake.

But since our solar system is located in the plane of the Galaxy, our view of it is edge-on. From far away, it would look like this galaxy, above, with dark lanes of dust and gas, obscuring the light from the inner regions.
